Laurent: Did you visit Paris?
Rob: I didn't have time to visit, even tho I love Paris, it's my favorite city. I'd like to enjoy it but I'm stuck in my hotel room all the time. You don't always have time to go out when you're working.

Laurent: What do you feel when you see scenes from the wedding of Kate Middleton and Prince William? Do you feel emotional? Are you smiling? Is it important for you?
Rob: I mean, yeah. I didn't realise that I would feel that emotional, especially when they left the chapel as an ordinary but loving couple, it was touching. I didn't think I would be interested at all, and then I saw how many people were fascniated about this Cinderella story. They're just two normal people but intriguing at the same time. It's funny to see what people are imagining when they look at them. We like to watch famous people, trying to decipher if they're dumb or not *laughs* But it's different when it comes to the Royal family, we feel like they're untouchable.

Laurent: RP stay with us, we're going to watch the first scenes from Water For Elephants, your last movie, where you play along side Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz. Commentary by Pascal Deschamps.

In Paris, like London or Berlin, it's not much to say that Robert Pattinson attracts crowds. It's the Twilight effect, it is not an hairspray brand but a series of vampires movies, from which he was the big discovery. A helping hand from destiny, maybe, which also could have been a liability. Before making him the hero of his movie, the director hesitated a lot.

Francis Lawrence: Honestly, I didn't know what Robert was capable of. The Twilight movies are so stylised, you can't even recognize him with the contacts and the makeup and the hair. But when I met him, I thought he was fitting for the character.

Luarent: Did you need to do something new, to leave the world of vampires? Did you need to prove yourself that you could do something diferent?
Rob: I don't think so, I don't think I needed any proving. It was a nice change. The only thing that worried me was to see if people were going to accept me as this character or not.

Laurent: Did the director, Francis Lawrence, manage to transport you into this 1930's universe, this particuliar universe which is dark but bright at the same time?
Rob: Him and the production made enormous efforts to make everyone believe we were on a real circus, with material from the 30s. When we were on the set, it was amazing, everything was so authentic. It was so different from this set for example, where when you leave, everything changes, but on this movie...
Laurent: You were deep into this world?
Rob: Yes, completely. It was so easy to believe that we were there, in the 1930s.

Laurent: One word about Twilight. You filmed the last movie. Do you think it's going to be difficult to turn the page, to do something different or are you scared from this rupture?
Rob: Not really. I've done so many of the Twilight movies in such a short time, it feels like it went by really fast. Next month I think I can past for a 17 years old anymore. My wrinkles are showing.

Laurent: Do you sometimes feel imprisoned from reaching your goals and dreams by being thrust into this world...how do you cope?
Rob: Sometimes but I mean it's really... you always find places. Last year, it's true that I let myself be concerned about things but I mean.. I just deal. Your life changes and you gotta adapt to what life gives you.

Laurent: You have time to live, time to fall in love. There are millions of young women watching us tonight. Do you have time to fall in love too?
Rob: *laughs* Yes, there's plenty...there's always time for that, right?
Rob: I think so, yeah.

Laurent: We'll see you soon in Bel Ami, Maupassant's novel. Another exciting movie?
Rob: Yes, it was one of my favorite books when I was young. People are asking me, "how did you make it in English?". It's kind of weird to hear the questions people ask me in France about it. But I really wanted to make this movie.

Laurent: Thank you for being here tonight. Good luck for the future and for this movie which comes out this Wednesday in our theaters. Thanks again.

The Lost Boy

Is there anything more to Robert Pattinson than stellar genes and a good line in brooding? You bet, says Hermione Eyre

When I arrive at Fox studios in Los Angeles, the mid-morning sunshine is already crazy-bright. "Go straight ahead till you reach the doughnut," says security guard, gesturing toward a 12ft sculpture honouring Homer Simpson. "And then keep going, past the Star Wars mural, till you get to a row of penguins. Opposite the panguis, there's a hedge sculpted in the shape pf a violin. You should find Mr. Pattinson there." This is the mad, make-believe world that Robert Pattinson now inhabits. He's here doing last-minute voice dubbing, even though it's Sunday and the studious are deserted, because he is currently Britains's highest-paid actor (last year's Sunday Times Rich List put the 24-years-old's worth at £ 13 million) and his work is never done. He is a nice boy from leafy Barnes, west London, who became an international teen idol after his brooding performance in the scarily popular vampire saga Twilight (now a tetralogy). He is the Keanu Reeves of the Facebook generation; Leonardo DiCaprio for age of Twitter. He shaves his sdieburns or has a beer and thousands of fans comment about it. He has even acquired a slightly demeaning nickname: RPattz. But while his character Edward Cullen is doomed to stay 17 for ever, Pattinson is growing up and moving on.

No more blockbuster franchises: he is about to shoot Don DeLillo's Cosmopolis, directed by auteur David Cronenberg ("The novel reads like an incredibly long poem," says Pattinson enthusiastically. "The film's going to be totaly an utterly out there"). He has also stepped into the role of leading man in two films this year, first opposite Reese Witherspoon in the circus epic Water for Elephants, then with Uma Thurman in the Gut de Maupassant adaptation Bel Ami. Older women, as he tells me, are nothing new to him: "Every girl I went out with in my teens was older than me. My first girlfriend was 26, I was 17. Women who were older always seemed more exciting." Because they knew more? "I guess so. I used to think I was a bit of a bad-ass when I was younger. I liked that it annoyed people how much younger I was. I liked walking into a room with a woman and people looking at us and thinking: they do not look like together."

If these women are well-dressed, I can see why observers might make that judgement. Today, Pattinson is wearing tatty vintage sunglasses, black sweatshirt, black T-shirt, black jeans and the unshaven, rumpled air of a man who has woken up to find that his car has already been waiting outside for some time. This happens to him a lot, I think. He dumps his cigarettes, laptop and keys on the table and sighs at his own laziness. "My ideal job would be one day a week. When I first started acting, I'd get one job a year that lasted three months, and then I'd do nothing the rest of the time but I'd have enough money to survive. I'd read all the papers every day, get in a lot of DVDs... That was great." He breaks into a wide-cheekboned smile, eyes heavy-lidded, gentle and slightly feline; like James Dean, without the self-hatred.

He's 24 now, but, perhaps ironically, given his vampiric alter-ego's perpetual teenagedhood, seems younger. His face lights up when he sees his favourite lunch has been delivered to the studio: chicken kebab. “I've got simple tastes." He's a sweet, goofy boy, quick to laugh and smile, though he doesn't seem particularly happy. But he is, he says, more content than he used to be. He used to write music as a release (his compositions appeared on the Twilight soundtrack) but hasn't felt the need for a while. "I have to be incredibly depressed to write songs and I'm not. What makes me want to write songs is when I wake up crying. I would have no idea why I was crying, but it made me sad for myself... " And he bursts out laughing.

But the pressure of overnight, global success can't be escaped. The swarm that follows him restricts his choices in many ways. "I'd really really love to do a play in London," he says. "But I'd just be afraid it would turn into an 'NSync concert. Or people would come along expecting it to be something like Twilight. From the little amount of theatre I've done, I know that usually you can feel a push from the audience, who have come along wanting the show to succeed. But when I go to premieres, it's more like the crowd is pulling, really wanting something from you. I always feel completely drained afterwards. It would be very strange and exhausting to have that kind of experience every night on stage."

Despite such fears, he denies that the adulation is really for him. He says he's simply a cipher that makes the frenzy permissible. "It's very clear that people have gone there for an excuse to go crazy. You can't stand around in the street and go crazy but get together with your friends at a Twilight thing and you have an environment where you can." This kind of modest thoughtfulness will probably save his sanity. A little vanity comes with the territory, though and Pattinson prepares for shirtless scenes by "going to the gym for four hours a day. I don't eat at all expect for protein shakes. But I don't understand how you could maintain that all your life. After the scene's done, I don't work out again. It's a ridiculous idea that you're not a proper actor unless you have a six-pack."

Pattinson is currently working a six-day week on film projects and doesn't have a social life, or a place of his own. "I came close to buying a house in Los Angeles, but 20 minutes from signing the contract I freaked out. So I don't own a house or really have a home. It can drive you a bit crazy not having any kind of anchor. Hopefully it will settle down some time soon but for the next few years, I'm going to be filming all over the place. I thought I would get a dog. Then wherever the dog was would kind of be my home."

He adopted Bear, a German shepherd-pitbull crossbreed ("100 pet cent mutt"), from a dog shelter in Louisiana: a canine death row. "Bear was two days away from euthanasia. We thought he was traumatised by his near-death experience." Who's we? Was this a solo rescue mission, or was Pattinson accompanied by a certain elfin co-star? He has long been linked with Kristen Stewart, but adopting a dog together would surely mean they were getting serious. "Well..." He looks flustered. Are you going to be a single parent to Bear? "Um, yes, I guess so." The rumours about their impending marriage aren't true, then? "No they're not. I was told I was meant to be getting married somewhere called 'Napa Valley'. It sounded quite cool. Maybe I will get married there."

The ambiguity that surrounds the relationship status of KStew and RPattz (are they? Aren't they? Do we care? The only thing that's certain is that neither will say one way or the other) conveniently generates a huge amount of publicity for their vampire movies. I put it to him that the whole thing is a studio fabrication. "No," he says, kindly but firmly. "Oh no. I'd love it if they tried. If studio tried to get involved with my personal life, I could start messing around with them in return... No. There's nothing nefarious going on, I just don't like people taking my picture. It's not nice when your life becomes someone else's news. Even when you're having a good time and someone takes a picture and days, "Look at them having a good time!" I feel like, it's not your good time." So he isn't working to a careful PR strategy? "People think we have people organising everything, that it's all a publicity stunt. It's not. There is no magical entourage - you're just a person on your own. You have to figure it out."

Despite some 'crazy' Hollywood experiences - such as Will Smith coming up to him on Oscars night, just before he was due to present an award, and advising him, "Don't try to be funny. Don't even think about it. Just be cool" - Pattinson says he doesn't have much fun with his fame. Has he learned about what young Hollywood can get away with? Why doesn't he just freeload and fool around? "It just isn't possible to get away with that stuff with camera phones around. I can't do it. If I have four berrs, I'm destroyed teh entire next day. I just don't understand how these stars used to go on benders all the time." He pauses. "Cocaine. Must be.”

He sends every script to his parents to read ("They always come up with good advice because they think differently from the industry. My dad compares every script to Jaws and Superman...") and still misses his childhood pet, a West Highland terrier called Patty Pattinson - "and her middle name was Pat."
It's not going to do anything to limit his appeal to his legions of fans, but he's almost ridiculously soft-hearted. He was drawn to the film Water for Elephants, he says, because of his grey, wrinkly co-star, an elephant called Tai. "I saw her recenly and she remembered me; at least I think she did. She had a new headpiece on and I said "Nice hat, Tai" and her trunk went up to her head. She's amazing." When asked what the greatest extravagance his not-insignificant pay packet has brought him, he says, "It sounds ridiculous but my dog was sick with a puppy disease called parvo and it was such a relief being able to go into the vet and say, 'I want the best, immediately.'"

Water for Elephants is set during the last American Depression, and Pattinson’s performance is impressively controlled, with a subtle sense of period. "I looked at Gary Cooper films, at his stange and stillness. Camera technique wasn't what it is, and you used to have to stay really still. Acting was much more about your voice. Also, my character is a vet, so there's a calmness to him, as there is with anyone who's good around animals." He and Reese Witherspoon crackle on screen; by his standards, the decade between them is nothing. "She isn't really much older than me at all," he says gallantly. Water for Elephants probably isn't his breakthrough performance - the role that will put paid to his teen-idol reputation - and nor was Little Ashes, in wich he played Salvador Dali with huge panache, but, little by little, Pattinson is emerging out of the box marked 'eye candy'. For now, though, it seems inevitable he will remain tabloid fodder. "Gossip magazines make more money them most movies," he says regretfully, until I pull him up: "not your movies." (The Twilight saga has grossed £ 1.12 billion worldwide - the next film Breaking Dawn Part 1, is out on 12 November.) "Yeah, OK," he laughs.

Even so, there's something slightly lost about Robert Pattinson. "I never get what I want," he sighs at one point. His puppy is sick, he doesn't have a home and, reading between the lines, his love life is looking distinctly grey. The mournful edge in his personality is what makes him so desirable, though - and so romantic. Thank goodness this multi-millioneire matinee idol isn't as pleased with himself as he should be: he'd be unbearable. As it is, he's still an outsider, soft and pliable and modest, still waiting to come out of his shell.

He has been in Berlin before. At that time Robert Pattinson was 17 and "Everything was different". And he doesn't mean just the city. Back then he could walk the streets alone. Nowadays he promotes his new movie 'Water for Elepehants' at the Hotel de Rome while thousands of Twilight fans compass the Bebelplatz.

Welt: When you woke up this morning, did you know in which city you are right now?
Rob: Honestly? I had no idea. And this happens to me quite often lately.

Welt: You're jetting around the world for a couple of years now. Do you actutally feel at home somewhere?
Rob: I don't even have a home right now. My parents cleared out my room in London, so I'm without a doss right now. I'll work on that. Hopefully.

Welt: If you had the choice, where would you like to wake up?
Rob: There's a cottage in the South of France, where I've been a couple of years ago. There was nothing in the area, I was all by myself. I'd like that.

Welt: You have a very execptional co-star in your new movie 'Water for Elephants'. How's it to work with a elephant?
Rob: It takes some of your self assurance away, no matter what kind of wild animal you're working with. Standing next to something this giant, makes you humble. On the other hand it seems like, that an elephant makes everyone happy. The whole crew became children again, trying to pet her all the time. Tai is a female elephant, she truly was the nices co star I've ever had. Kristen, forgive me.

Welt: Tai did something , a lot of your fans are envious about. She's was constantly touching you with her trunk, during the movie. Was is planned or did it just happen?
Rob: During the first weeks, we've trained with candy and soft candy so she'd follow me. After that she probably was convinced, that I always have them with me. She was constantly checking my pockets and every other place.

Welt: Does it have something methaporic? One should be a thick skinned person in the movie buisness?
Rob: Absolutely. I used to be at many auditions, you're one of 200, waiting for hours on your chance. And then they just take a glance at the first page of your application and tell you: No. If you've experiences this a hundred times, you immune to disappointment. You couldn't stand it without a sick skin.

Welt: After all those vampire-teen movies you're coming along with Water for Elephants and the upcoming Maupassant remake 'Bel-Ami'. Is this a ripening for you as an actor?
Rob: Yes, I hope so. I sill don't feel grown up. I do look more mature in 'Water'. I had to play the eternal 17 year old, trimmed to look like it, in the Twilight movies. Getting more mature roles is like a blessing. I must and have to prove that I can do it.

Welt: After three years of Twilight: Did you definitely wrap the fifth part?
Rob: Yes. A few days ago. It's done.

Welt: And did you celebrate it?
Rob: Kind of. People were constantly leaving the set so we've celebrated for quite some time. The last scene was just Kristen Stewart and me. It was on a warm, bright beach, a beautiful end after shooting five movies in the cold.

Welt: Are you looking forward to your life without Twilight?
Rob: It's not quite over yet. It takes some time until the 5th movie is out and promoted. But yes, it takes some weight off your shoulders. We've shot the last two movies right after another, the constant make-up and 'whitening' took a lot of time. But I might miss all of it. It was an important phase of my life, afterall.

Welt: Isn't the hype around you like a circus?
Rob: Sort of. You can't prevent it though. You're a little bit like a dressage horse, constantly keeping up an illusion. The worst time was when I did nothing. I just had to be there and stood around. The last time I went to Germany, I went into the Müncher Olympiastadion with Taylor Lautner and 30.000 girls were screaming. It was bizarre. Like a rockstar just without making music. They've told us to let them scream for 15 minutes until they'd lose their voices and then we went to the next event.

Welt: Would you've rejected the role of Edward Cullen if you knew about the massive hype beforehand?
Rob: Who knows. Maybe I'd have considered it. But I don't want to be ungrateful. The worst time of my life was when I had no job. I've asked myself: What are you doing here? I almost gave up. I didn't see a future despite my thick skin. But the industry is quite strange: back then I hit rock bottom. I thought this is my last shot, and there were 3000 competitors. But then I became Edward. And suddenly I can make the movies I've always wanted to make. That's my motiviation. I don't want to be a memory as the guy who played this vampire.

Robert Pattinson (24) takes a break of playing a vampire and discovered his heart for animals on set of his new movie.

You play a young vet who works for a travelling circus. Why did this role attract you?
"I liked just rolling around in the dirt the most. (laughs) My character in the 'Twilight' movies is so obsessional. I always have the same expression, I'm not allowed to change my face and never sweat. If I just have a tiny bead of sweat, suddenly five makeup artists bustle around me."

Was it difficult shooting with animals?
"It's probably similar to shooting with babies, they don't adhere to stage directions either. Elephants do whatever they want. Whenever I had unexpectedly a trunk in my face, I had to improvise spontaneously. "

Are you afraid of the wild animals?
"Oh yes, especially of the zebras, because they are so unpredictable. Once a zebra ran towards us and I ran away in panic. Later I heard that everyone made fun of me. Christoph Waltz always joked that he throw himself in front of Reese to save her life, while I apparently disappeared behind a caravan like a coward. (laughs)"

You've also filmed several scenes with a dog. Is that why you now have your own dog?
"Yes, after the shooting I directly adopted my four-legged friend from the animal shelter. He was going to be put down the next day. He's a mongrel and I'm still looking for a name. The poor was completely confused at the beginning: One day still in the shelter, the next day he's already in the privat jet from Vancouver, where I'm shooting 'Breaking Dawn' since 6 months, to LA and now lives in the 'Four Seasons'. (laughs)"

The dog has indeed taken over your heart at first sight. Do you also believe in love at first sight with women?
"Yes, because I've always noticed at the first meeting if a woman is something special. I absolutely believe in the big love - it's such a great feeling! When you're in love with someone, you want to show her all the time, that she's the best in the whole wide world."

Who did you have a crush on as a teenager?
"I was head over heels in love with Kate Moss."

Why do you actually never talk about your relationship to your co-star Kristen Stewart?
"I've never had the need to reveal my love life. I cured of that already when I was 12. At that time I asked a girl out and the other day everybody was whispering and laughing in school. What a fuss! It was so childish and embarrassing, so that I've never spoken to that girl again. (laughs) The more people know about you, the more they also speculate about the rest. That also has a devastating effect on the stock exchange. (laughs)"

Do you understand that many people envy your great life?
"Just because they don't know it in detail. My life is actually pretty boring. I work all day, live in hotels, sit in airplanes or sleep in the car."

Do you do something about arranging your hotel room a bit more personal?
I always have my guitar collection with me. Unfortunately I can't practise until late at night, the shooting start too early. And I always take my own TV with me, the ones in the hotel suck. Meanwhile I own around 5,000 DVDs - from which I haven't seen 4,000. That's an advantage when you spend much time alone in hotels: I'm becoming a real movie connoisseur. (laughs)"
